Qwirkle rules and scoring

How lines are built, how every turn is scored, the 12-point Qwirkle, trading tiles and the end-game bonus — plus a printable score sheet.

108 tiles: six colors, six shapes, three of every combination. Take turns adding tiles to a shared grid, building lines where every tile shares a color or a shape. You score every line you build or extend, and completing a line of six — a Qwirkle — is worth 12. When the bag is empty and someone plays their last tile, highest score wins.

Building lines

  • A line is all one color in different shapes, or all one shape in different colors.
  • No tile can appear twice in the same line, so a line can never be longer than six.
  • Every tile you place must fit every line it touches — across and down.

Taking a turn

  • Setup: everyone draws six tiles from the bag and keeps them hidden.
  • First turn: the player who can play the most tiles sharing one color or one shape (no duplicates) goes first, and scores them.
  • Play: place one or more tiles, all in a single line. They must connect to the tiles already on the table, but needn't touch each other — as long as the finished line has no gaps.
  • Or trade: instead of playing, put any number of tiles back in the bag and draw replacements. That's your whole turn, and you score nothing.
  • After playing, draw back up to six.

The two outlined blue tiles were just played into the blue row. That completes all six blue shapes: a Qwirkle, 12. The blue clover also makes a two-tile clover column (2), and the blue diamond completes a three-tile diamond column (3). Total: 17.

How it ends

Once the bag is empty, players carry on without drawing. The first player to play their last tile ends the game and scores 6 bonus points on top of that turn. Highest total wins.

Quick answers

Is a Qwirkle 6 or 12 points?

12 — six for the tiles in the line plus a six-point bonus.

Can you play tiles in two directions in one turn?

No. Everything you place in a turn goes in one line, though each tile also scores any line it crosses.

Quick-add for the big turns.
