Dutch Blitz rules and scoring

Setting up your piles, playing to the Dutch piles, Post piles, calling Blitz, and scoring each round — plus a printable score sheet.

A speed card game with no turns — everyone plays at once, racing to lay cards in shared piles in the middle. You score for every card you get down, and the round ends the instant someone empties their Blitz pile and shouts “Blitz!” Cards left in your Blitz pile cost you. First to 75 wins.

Setup

  • Each player has their own 40-card deck — red, blue, green and yellow, numbered 1 to 10. The backs (pump, carriage, plow, pail) tell the decks apart.
  • Deal yourself a Blitz pile of 10 cards, top card face up, and three face-up Post piles of one card each. With two players, four or five Post piles are often used to keep the game from stalling.
  • The rest is your hand, held face down.

How to play

  • Count cards off your hand three at a time onto a face-up Wood pile; only its top card is playable. When your hand runs out, turn the Wood pile over — without shuffling — and keep going.
  • Play from the top of your Blitz pile, your Wood pile, or a Post pile — onto the shared Dutch piles in the middle, or onto your own Post piles.
  • Dutch piles start with a 1 and build up to 10, one color per pile. Anyone can play on any Dutch pile.
  • Play with one hand only, one card at a time.
  • If everyone is stuck, each player moves the top card of their Wood pile to the bottom and play resumes.

Post piles

  • Post piles build down, and each card must alternate between a boy and a girl. In the standard deck, red and blue cards show a boy and green and yellow cards a girl; expansion packs use other colors, so go by the picture.
  • Only the exposed lowest card of a Post pile is playable.
  • When you empty a Post pile, fill it with the top card of your Blitz pile — another way to drain it.

Calling Blitz and scoring

Empty your Blitz pile, shout “Blitz!”, and everyone stops. Sort the Dutch piles by the pictures on the card backs so everyone gets their own cards back, then score:

CardPoints
Each card you played to the Dutch piles+1
Each card left in your Blitz pile−2
Cards in your Post piles, Wood pile or hand0

Example

You got 14 cards into the middle but still had 3 in your Blitz pile: 14 − 6 = 8 for the round. Negative rounds happen.

Keep playing rounds until someone reaches 75. Highest score wins.
